Why Variety identification Matters?
Avocado orchards are a long-term investment, and mistakes in variety identity are costly to catch late. Traditional visual identification relies on subtle traits that can be slow to appear or easily confused between related varieties — the industry needs a faster, more objective way to confirm genetic identity before trees reach the orchard.
From Published Research to a Working Tool
Gene-G built the panel using a validated set of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously shown to uniquely distinguish avocado cultivars, published in Kämper et al., 2021. The team translated this marker set into a high-throughput multiplex genotyping assay suitable for routine commercial use, following our standard pipeline: bioinformatics-based marker selection, assay design, sample collection with technical and biological repeats, DNA extraction, and SNP screening and analysis.
What the Panel Delivered
The result is a reproducible genetic “fingerprint” for each avocado variety tested — trees of the same variety consistently matched, while different varieties were clearly distinguished. Results were also benchmarked against the published reference data, adding a further layer of validation.
A Practical Tool for the Industry
This project shows how a validated multi-SNP panel can move avocado variety verification from a slow, trait-based process to a fast, DNA-based one — helping nurseries and growers confirm clonal identity and protect planting material integrity early on.
