Marker-Assisted Selection

Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) accelerates modern plant and animal breeding by replacing slow, physical evaluations with precise genomic insights.

Using DNA markers linked to desirable traits—such as disease resistance, climate resilience, or yield quality—breeders can identify high-potential candidates at the seedling or early tissue stage.

By eliminating the need to wait for full mature growth or field exposure, MAS dramatically shortens breeding cycles, optimizes selection accuracy, and significantly reduces operational costs. It turns complex trait selection into a streamlined, data-driven science.

We use 2 testing technologies for MAS: MassArray allows us to screen thousands of samples on dozens of selected markers in short turnaround times (TAT) Realtime PCR is still a gold standard for screening thousands of samples on few to several markers. All of our DNA markers were carefully selected and validated to be as informative as possible.

Marker-Assisted Back-Cross

MABC (Marker-Assisted Back-Cross) is a breeding method used to introgress a desired gene from a "donor" plant into a "recipient" plant through backcrossing between offspring and parent.

Following each cross, genetic markers are used to select only the offspring carrying the desired trait ("positives"). Subsequently, screening a large number of genetic markers allows the breeder to select, from among these "positive" offspring, the individuals most similar to the recipient plant.

Seeds Genetic Purity

Gene-G offers genetic purity confirmation of parent lines or hybrids using an extended multi-marker DNA fingerprinting test based on dozens of widely distributed polymorphic SNPs (background traits).

Seeds Genetic Purity

Ensuring the genetic purity of seeds is one of the most critical — and historically most challenging — steps in modern agriculture. Growers worldwide invest heavily in premium seeds, expecting consistent quality, uniformity, and yield. Yet until recently, no universal standard existed for testing genetic purity. Traditional methods such as grow-out tests require an entire growing season, are influenced by environmental factors, and often fail to detect hidden impurities.

Gene-G addresses this gap with a DNA fingerprinting method that creates a unique genetic "blueprint" for each seed variety. By testing multiple SNPs across the genome, the method identifies off-types and confirms true-type hybrids with a level of precision that far exceeds conventional techniques. The result: reliable genetic purity data, independent of climate, geography, or season. Read more about this breakthrough approach in our featured article on HortiDaily.

As an additional layer of confidence, Gene-G's genetic purity testing is accredited under ISO 17025 by the Israeli Accreditation Authority — the international standard for laboratory testing competence. This accreditation means our results meet the highest global quality benchmarks, giving seed companies and growers the assurance they need to make critical decisions with confidence.

A new standard in seed genetic purity assurance

It is so simple, you need to contact us, we provide you with the sampling protocol-instructions. We provide you access to our customer portal and you can start collecting samples and send it us.

We provide a detailed sampling protocol guide outlining which plates to use for each application and DNA extraction method. It also includes all relevant information regarding sample size, plate sealing, labeling, packing, and shipping address.

No. For best quality results, we recommend you germinate the seeds and sample smallest leaves.

Our multi-SNP approach assures that for any F1 to be tested there will be at least >1 SNPs heterozygote. Testing the parents is indeed an option. Furthermore, some of our customers also use our purity test to stabilize the parents for more and more SNPs. Nevertheless, our multi-SNP purity assay can be applied directly to any F1 hybrid without requiring prior screening of the parents.

We provide purity testing for a wide range of crops including tomato, cucumber, pepper, melon, and more.
